(AsiaGameHub) – On April 6, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed legislation that bans all kinds of online sweepstakes gaming in Maine. This law is named “An Act to Prohibiting the Use of Online Sweepstakes Gaming.”
Per this new law, every type of sweepstakes gaming platform will now fall under Maine’s definition of illegal gambling. Additionally, the legislation specifies that enforcement against operators of unlawful sweepstakes games will use existing criminal and regulatory laws instead of relying on an unestablished set of enforcement standards.
Under the new legislation, operators of illegal online sweepstakes games will face fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per violation, with the amount depending on how many times they have broken the law.
All fines collected from enforcing this law will be directed to the Gambling Addiction Prevention and Treatment Fund, which funds treatment and recovery programs for those struggling with gambling addiction. Furthermore, any licensed gaming operator found violating this law could have their gaming license revoked.
