Belgium tightens crackdown on illegal gambling sites and support networks

(AsiaGameHub) –   Belgium has intensified its campaign against illicit gambling websites by implementing a comprehensive enforcement mechanism aimed at both the operators and the underlying digital infrastructure that enables them.

Within this new structure, Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy is empowered to mandate that various intermediary services block or sever connections with unlicensed gambling platforms. These intermediaries encompass internet service providers, content delivery networks, search engines, social media firms, domain registrars, and DNS providers.

The framework exerts pressure across multiple points. Internet service providers are obligated to block user access to blacklisted gambling sites, and firms like Cloudflare can be compelled to cease providing services to these platforms. Search engines may receive orders to de-list links to illegal operators, and social media platforms such as Meta must prohibit gambling advertisements.

Furthermore, domain registrars have the authority to suspend or cancel domains associated with illegal gambling activities. DNS providers, meanwhile, are tasked with preventing users from circumventing blocks via alternative domain resolution services.

Officials stated that intermediaries are given five business days to adhere to directives after being notified. Non-compliance may lead to penalties reaching €500,000 for each infraction.

While the Belgian Gaming Commission maintains its supervision of the legal market, the Business Court of Brussels now holds expanded authority to impose blocking orders on both the operators and the businesses that support their services.

Paul Laurent from the Belgian Anti-Online Piracy & Illegal Gambling Office reported that the reinforced system has already led to the blocking of dozens of gambling websites.
